It will be great too see The Purple One, and The Material Girl perform, and appear, on The Billboard Music Awards broadcast this coming Sunday night. It was last Sunday night, that my 8-year-old daughter, while overly consumed in Bieber Fever, asked me, “Daddy, What’s the difference between a music star versus a music superstar?” I gave her an answer that would appease the mind of my beloved little girls opinion of her “American Idol” influenced generation.
Prince Rogers Nelson is beyond being called a superstar. This show will honor his influence and ingenuity throughout a musical career that has spanned over three decades. Little Richard&James Brown pushed the envelope before his time, but Prince…pushed, licked, signed, sealed, and delivered the motherfucker in a way, that only his brilliant ass could. Justin Bieber‘s “If I Was Your Boyfriend” can’t catch the eclectic eroticism, combined with the outright orgiastic, off, but yet, on the one heartbeat of Prince’s”If I was Your Girlfriend.” Bieber’s song is a preface to an average book-Prince’s one song is an extremely small snippet of an entire body of classic literature.
Madonna‘s balls were bigger than Katy Perry’s tits ever could be. She appeared on American Bandstand, stuff dripping down her stockings, and proclaimed to the late great Dick Clark her intentions of “ruling the world.” A great performer and dancer, with an average, at best, voice -Madonna managed to too do just that. She set the stage for the future of music video success along with The King Of Pop-Michael Jackson. Their emphasis on merging choreography, whether it be live, or on video, with the actual music, helped MTV launch the current non-video version of it’s once brilliant self. Janet Jackson, Brittany Spears, Pink, and many others, owe as much of their success to Madonna as she does to Blondie’s Debby Harry. Harry’s “Rapture” ruptured the hymen of Madonna’s “Lucky Star” years before, yet it was Madonna that persevered. Artists like Miguel, Frank Ocean, and the multi-talented Bruno Mars, give this almost 50-year-old hope for the future of pop music. More firm fluff than filler? Will there ever be another Thriller? ~Daryl
