I’m sure Questlove from The Roots was thrilled beyond belief as Prince tore up his home stage on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon early this morning. Backed by his rocking all female band 3rdeyeGirl, Prince Rogers Nelson instantly reminded the audience of why he is one of the quintessential recording artists EVER!!
After blazing through a new track “Screwdriver,” The Purple One revisited one of his most classic guitar driven tracks-“Bambi” which took this long time fan back to a time when I first realized the potential of his unlimited musical genius. The modern day take on this song was beyond brilliant. “Bambi” was on his second album and it literally tore the roof off of late 70’s and early 80’s R&B/Soul music. Part Jimi Hendrix, combined with the intensity of James Brown, it still sounded like no one else but Prince. The decision to put this hard driving rock influenced track on the same album that contained the blazing funk of tracks like “Sexy Dancer” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover” was beyond bold. Then again, what else would be expected of an 18 year-old, unheard of artist, who walked into Warner Brothers and demanded that he have full control of his own writing, producing and arranging? In an instant, Lake Minnetonka, outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota, was on the same musical map as Gary, Indiana. Other great artists are retired, or prematurely resting in peace while Prince continues to redefine an iconic legacy already cemented in greatness. ~Daryl
