This is such a tired subject. White folks, who feel comfortable enough to use the N-word, have been doing so primarily as a tool of hate for decades. Hate, and many other evil’s have been associated with the word to a degree that it should NEVER be appropriate for others to use it.
We often hear the phrase “Why are black people so offended, when they constantly refer to themselves…by using the term.” The connotation is simply not the same. My friend can call his sister a bitch, but if the same word comes out of my mouth in describing her=It takes on a new meaning. Italians call themselves “dago” and “wop” with affection. What do you think would happen, if I ran through Little Italy shouting these terms?
Some say that the n-word holds too much power. This fact is beyond being true. The problem is that the power behind the word will be forever intrinsically linked with the hate, violence, and downright evil that was/is aimed at generation after generation of African-Americans.
